TEACHER AS RESEARCHER
BADGE
Teacher research is "radical and passionate, deeply personal and profoundly political—richly embedded in situations where teachers have agency around their own practice
and where their commitments to educational access and equity remain clear in spite of these 'trying times.'”
~ Susan Lytle, "On Better"
Teachers are sometimes viewed as "cogs" that make the wheel of education go 'round, as actors who follow scripted curriculum someone else has written, or as "technicians" rather than "professionals" who have something to add to the body of knowledge that shapes the ways teaching and learning unfold in schools. As you move down this badging pathway, you will learn methods for systematically and intentionally studying your own teaching and your students' learning. You will read a teacher research book of your own choice from a trunk of books that Cindy will provide that situates the field of teacher research in the larger context of educational research and describes actual methods and examples of how to conduct it. You will also shadow a "virtual teacher research mentor," analyzing videos from her classroom to discover what teacher research looks like in practice. As you research a burning teacher research question of your choice, you will compose publicly as a way of pushing out your learning in relation to that question. You will also respond to the thinking of your classmates, share your own writing in community with others in this class, and revise your work based on their feedback. Finally, you will create a metacognitive reflection to reflect on your developing identity as a teacher researcher and post it to your blog. Your completion of these activities will scaffold your learning as you work toward the final project for this badge--a Teacher Research Roundtable that will allow you to share your refined thinking about the teacher research question you have studied while working on this badge.
