CONNECTED LEARNING
BADGE
Connected learning is "about empowering students to transition from passive recipients of discrete knowledge into active and engaged learners who discover, connect, invent, and produce – and along the way acquire the higher-order skills they need to thrive in the today’s world."
~ from "Create a Hub of Connected Learning," Connected Learning Alliance
Some facets of authentic learning will never change: when we are deeply interested in what we're focusing on, we learn content, skills, and methods like never before; we are driven by those interests to produce artifacts that act as evidence of the knowledge we're acquiring and network with peers and others who share our purposes and could broaden or benefit from what we have learned. But is that what learning looks like in schools for youth today? As you move down this pathway, you will learn about a framework called "connected learning." The principles embedded in this framework take these authentic practices to a new and different level by leveraging today's digital affordances so that all youth have equitable access to rich opportunities for learning. By developing their capacities and desire to act on the world, youth can be active agents who change it into a place where all humans can learn and thrive. To learn about these exciting possibilities, you will read a book that demonstrates what connected learning looks like in varied educational contexts and provides methods for actualizing in your own. You will also analyze how connected learning that takes place in out-of-school contexts has the potential to help us re-think the kind of learning opportunities we can provide in schools. As you research an actual technique for connected learning, you will compose publicly as a way of pushing out your learning. You will also respond to the thinking of your classmates, share the connected learning artifact you have composed in community with others in this class, and revise your work based on their feedback. Finally, you will create a metacognitive reflection to reflect on your developing identity as a connected learner and post it to your blog. Your completion of these activities will scaffold your learning as you work toward the final project for this badge--a Design Challenge Assignment Sheet that you could actually use in your future classroom. This project will allow you to share the refined thinking about connected learning that you have acquired while working on this badge.
